From Shrewsbury take the A488 Bishop’s Castle road towards Pontesbury. In Pontesbury 50m after sign on left for Pontesbury Public Hall turn left signposted Habberley. Stay on this road for 3km, soon passing the Plough on the right. Stay on this windy road in Habberley, ignoring side turns, to pass the Mytton Arms on the left. Stay on this classic South Shropshire lane entirely lacking in landmarks for 1km. Shortly after passing a farm and house, the road enters woodland. Parking at a forest road entrance on the left.
An alternative, not recommended, is to take the Longden Road from Shrewsbury, but this has no direct access from the A5 bypass and is reached via Roman Road. Go through Longden and on to Pulverbatch. Look for a right fork by a long row of white cottages, take the right fork, then almost immediately turn right again long an inconspicuous lane signposted Habberley 2. Soon after see a ‘Mud on Road’ warning sign. Continue for 2km to the parking area at the entrance to a forest track on the right at the far end of a coppice.
Do not rely on the postcode to guide you to the exact meeting point for a foray. Postcodes in rural areas often cover a large area. The OS grid reference is more precise and unchanging. What3Words is also more precise, and the detailed instructions should also help to pinpoint the location.
Beginners are welcome at all forays.
Please read the Foray Risk Assessment before attending. It is advisable to confirm with the leader that the foray is taking place, as on extremely rare occasions forays have had to be changed at short notice. Please email the Secretary for more details.
